Early Life & Education

Emeritus Professor Peter Olufemi Adeniyi was born in Ootunja-Ekiti, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. He began his educational journey at St. Peter's Catholic School, Ikole-Ekiti, where he obtained his Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1957. He proceeded to Egbeoba High School, Ikole-Ekiti, earning his Secondary School Certificate in 1963, followed by his Higher School Certificate from Abeokuta Grammar School in 1965.

He pursued a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geography from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1969, before obtaining multiple postgraduate qualifications from the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC), The Netherlands, and the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he completed his Ph.D. in Geography in October 1978. He also holds an Advanced Certificate in Remote Sensing from the United States Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona (1983), and a Basic Certificate in Surveying from the Federal Survey School, Oyo (1966).

Academic and Professional Journey

Professor Adeniyi began his career as a Survey Officer-in-training at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing (1966-1969), then briefly taught Mathematics and Geography at Egbeoba High School (1969-1970). He joined the Department of Geography, University of Lagos, in 1973 as Lecturer II, and rose to become a Professor in 1986. He served in several academic and administrative positions at the University, including as Managing Director of UNILAG Consult (1995-2001), and was a Permanent Member of Senate from 1986 to 2009. He officially retired in April 2009 and was appointed Emeritus Professor on February 8, 2013.

He also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (1975-1978) and Adjunct Professor (1987-1993) at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

His research centered on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to natural resources management, land use planning, and environmental monitoring. He has published over 150 scholarly, technical, and policy papers and served as a consultant to organizations including the World Bank, African Development Bank, UNDP, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Leadership in Higher Education

Professor Adeniyi is a widely respected university administrator, having served in numerous leadership roles:

  • Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure (2002-2006)
  • Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Ado-Ekiti (2008-2010)
  • Chairman, Advancement Board, University of Lagos (2008-2010)
  • Chairman, Planning and Implementation Committee, Elizade University (2008-2012)
  • Council Member, Elizade University (2012-2015)
  • Chairman, PIC of Chrisland University (2008-2015)
  • Pioneer Pro-Chancellor, Chrisland University (2015-2016)
  • Chairman, Fact-Finding Panel, Plateau State University (2014-2015)
  • Member, Governing Council, St. Albert the Great Seminary, Abeokuta (2018-Present)

He also served as Visiting Professor to the National Universities Commission (2007) and participated actively in the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

National and International Engagements

Professor Adeniyi played major roles in shaping Nigeria's land and environmental policies. Most notably, he served as:

  • Chairman, Presidential Technical Committee on Land Reform (2009-2024)
  • Member, The Africa Land Advisory Group (2015-Present)
  • National Coordinator, Rural Development Data for DFRRI (1988-1992)
  • Chairman, National Committee on Remote Sensing Centre (1994)
  • President, African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (1992-2004)
  • President, Nigerian Society of Remote Sensing (1984-1987)
  • Project Coordinator, Slum Identification and Needs Assessment Study, Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (2014)
  • Member, UN Economic Commission for Africa Expert Groups (1994 & 2000)

He held over 40 national and international leadership, advisory, and technical roles, with significant impact on environmental and land information systems across Africa.

Community Development

A committed advocate of grassroots development, Professor Adeniyi currently serves as:

  • Chairman, Sokedile Community Development Association, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos
  • Financial Secretary, Ifako Ijaiye Leaders of Thought Association
  • Chairman, Ifako Ijaiye CDC Fundraising Committee for the Multipurpose Hall
  • National President, Ootunja Sons and Daughters Association Worldwide

  • Doctor of Environmental Studies (Honoris Causa) - University of Waterloo, Canada
  • Second Best Vice-Chancellor of Specialized Universities in Nigeria (2005)
  • AARSE Merit Award
  • Senior Fellow, Institute of Administrative Management of Nigeria
  • Honorary Fellow, Entomological Society of Nigeria

He also holds several chieftaincy titles:
